Title: All Its Fear Pass Away
Author: Kaylee Arafinwiel
Summary: The Elves of Cuivienen work out life, because life is weird if you don't know how to do it. Also, the Calyai (Shining folk, Maiar) show up and help them to do Life.
Prompt: "‘Who’s that? Be off! You can’t come in. Can’t you read the notice: No admittance between sundown and sunrise?

‘Of course we can’t read the notice in the dark,’ Sam shouted back. ‘And if hobbits in the Shire are to be kept out in the wet on a night like this, I’ll tear down your notice when I find it.’"
~ The Return of the King, “The Scouring of the Shire”

A/N: Title comes from another RotK quote: 'Now not day only shall be beloved, but night too shall be beautiful and blessed and all its fear pass away.' The Return of the King

The Quendi, they called themselves. The Speakers. Yet, they were of three Kindreds, that became obvious ere long. For they had wakened, had they not, in three different places; the smallest group had been found in the meadows, the middle in the woods, near outcroppings of stone. This, the largest, had been on the beach itself, on the outskirts of the wood.

Six there were who were chief among them, who had wakened first and claimed their Kindreds as their own. Though Calelil and Aramath were of the Third Kindred, that called Nelyai, the folk of Enel, they liked well enough to meet with the Minyai and Tatyai, folk of Imin and Tata, and exchange information. All the Three Kindreds learned, they would share with one another. That was as it should be, their chiefs proclaimed, and so it was.

Shelter was one thing they learned to make quickly enough, weaving together branches and sea-grasses. Rafts and fishing nets, too, came readily enough to those of the Third Kindred, and they shared their bounty of fish with the others.

When the Awakened Elves had stumbled their way through the basic tasks needed for survival, they were able to focus on other things.

Children, for instance. Bringing forth a new generation under the stars was a pleasurable activity.  When their Chieftain Enel's wife Enelyë brought forth three sons, the Nelyai rejoiced. Daughters, too, were welcomed with gladness, and learned all their mothers could teach them.

Minwë, Towë and Nowë were close to the other Chieftains' sons, Ingoldo, Ingwë, and Finwë, and as they grew up, they fished or hunted together with their fathers while their mothers remained at home to keep the council fires, tend the grains that the Minyai had learned to grow from the Shining Ones, mill the flour and bake the bread.

The Shining Ones were the Calyai, the folk who were like Quendi and yet not. They were helpers and friends, and the Quendi welcomed them as teachers. The Calyai refined the rudimentary skills the Quendi had discovered for themselves, and taught them how to craft things the Quendi had not yet begun to imagine. The skill of spinning and weaving cloth from the shed fur of forest beasts for instance, proved to yield better coverings than the woven grasses they had so far been used to.

Shelters, too, were better. No more were they rude tents of bark and leaves, but huts of stone, which the Calyai had showed them to dig for, and of brick, which they had learned how to bake.

The Quendi made their first town in the meadow by the bay of Cuivienen...just in time.

Then the storm came.

In The Beginning (January 1, challenge day 1)
Author: Kaylee Arafinwiel
Summary: Well, it's one beginning, at least. The Song of Iluvatar welcomes His Children into existence.
A/N: OC-centric.

The stars were singing.

In all her life after, she could never be sure how she had known that.

Stars. Such a small word, yet it meant so much to her.

And why was she sleeping with her eyes closed? Eyes. The word flashed across her consciousness, and suddenly she knew, and knew how to open them...a brightness paired against the darkness, so bright that she rolled over on the sand, above the gentle lapping of the waves - and pressed herself into the one lying next to her.

All the while, the stars sang. They sang of welcome, of brightness, of life. Life.

Slowly, she sat up, relishing each new sensation, memorizing the Song, for something told her not to forget, oh, she must not forget...

The one next to her leaned into her as he sat up himself. Awestruck and wondering, he stared heavensward with her as the Music reigned over all. Around them, some near, some further, other figures like themselves were stirring to wakefulness.

A name came into her mind. Caleilil.

"Calelil," she said softly, aloud, to hear the sound of her own voice. Around her, others were speaking softly, now the Music had died away.

Beside her, Caleilil's companion lay a - hand? hand yes, that was the word - on her arm, and spoke just as softly. "Aramath," he said, his voice musical and pleasant to her ears.

Their eyes met, and the two knew they belonged together. "Aramath," she whispered, as he murmured her name, honey-sweet. Around them, others were discovering each other among the hushed whispers of the waves on the starlit beach. Further away, when they had time to think of aught but each other, they would discover camps in the nearby woods and meadows.

The Elves had awoken.

Creator’s Notes (optional): For B2MEM, the first prompt was "He was interested in roots and beginnings..." OC names are taken from the realelvish.net randomizer, first lines, last lines, canon beginning and canon ending from SWG's randomizer. That's a lot to make sense of...hopefully I succeeded.

...and it may be March 2 for most of the people who follow my journal, or at least late enough that you're asleep. My apologies, it's been a really rough day emotionally. Luckily it's been a productive one writing-wise...but that's for another post. I did promise.

Today's Bible reading is Matthew 4:12-17, Mark 1:14-15, and Luke 4:14-15.

Matthew says that Jesus "left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea" where He began his ministry in order to fulfill the words of the prophet Isaiah. He began preaching there. I admit I don't know the geography of the region at all, so I can't be sure how great a distance that was, but I know for sure He couldn't have just called Uber to go back to Nazareth if He was homesick! I wonder if his brothers (and sisters?) along with Mary (and Joseph? Was he still alive?) would have been able to go see Him in Capernaum very easily, or if it would have been a long trip.

Mark says "Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee" ...I wonder what was going through John's mind when he was arrested? Did he think Jesus would come to help him? Did he hope? Or did he expect Jesus to leave?

And Luke adds, "And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all." So He was welcome in Galilee, where I don't think he was so much in Nazareth, at least not later I suppose.

I'm really curious about that "returned in the power of the Spirit" phrase. Does that mean angels carried Him to Galilee? That he used the Holy Spirit to get there? Was it like teleportation? I suppose if any person could do that it'd be Him... Or does it just mean that He went to preach there? Huh. Things to think about, I guess...

So today is February 29, Leap Day to our modern calendar. It seems in Tolkien's world different cultures had different ways of dealing with the every-four-years discrepancy. I like the Shire's: they had 30 days to the month, every month, for twelve months. New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Midsummer and the two days on either side of it were "outside" any month. So when did they get their Leap Day? It was basically Midsummer, take 2. It wasn't in Solmath (their February-equivalent, though more like 22 January-20 February to us) which already had 30 days every year. I think the Shire calendar would be fun to use if we ever have a need to switch around...

Anyway, it's also the last day of February, which means March starts tomorrow, which means B2MEM starts tomorrow. Actually, since it starts at 12AM UTC, it's 4PM today for me when it starts...Well, we'll see when I get the prompt! I'm so excited!!! Are you excited, Tolkien friends??

All right, now that I've got all that off my chest, let's talk about Lent (if you want to, if not, that's why this part is under the cut :) )

During B2MEM I will make my Lent posts separate from my fic-related ones. Thank you to those who are reading my posts!

Back to Middle-earth Month 2020 - Endings and Beginnings

I can't seem to figure out how to put a banner on my Dreamwidth or Livejournals, but if I could it would probably be this one, as it matches the icon (I love this icon! Thank you to whoever created it!) Back to Middle-earth Month is coming! I love this castle, it gives me a Dol Amroth sort of feeling. Perfect place for seagulls. Or *ahem* bay gulls. *snickers at Donut-muse*

Anyway, speaking of birds and water leads me to my next Lenten study...

Lent #2

kayleearafinwiel: (Default)

So...yesterday I discovered that mom's not feeling appreciated enough. We both suffer from pain issues (her mostly because of age, me because of disability) and yet she and our roommate go to work full time during the week. I find myself couch-bound quite frequently because of my pain, but I'm going to try and push through it if I can, while I'm still theoretically mobile at least.

Concerning the Lenten season... )

Anyway, so B2MEM - or Back to Middle-earth Month, though I think most people who are friends with me on here know that (even if they don't participate, as I haven't shut up about it on Discord, FB and so on) - is fast approaching. It runs March 1-31, and late entries are usually welcome. I'm excited to participate, as I always am, though I feel a bit sad this time as it's the last year the Silmarillion Writer's Guild will be hosting it. I know Zhie is thinking over things to continue it, so it's not going away, but it feels like the end of an era.

Huge thanks to the SWG mods for all their hard work over the years!

Good morning, happy New Year, and all that jazz. The Roaring Twenties have returned? Well, if you believe the FB memes, anyway. At least we can all have 2020 vision? ...no? I'll see myself out...

(Sorry, too tired to tell good jokes, so you'll have to settle for bad ones.)

Anyway, tolkien-weekly began a new challenge late last year for prompts related to "Clock" that I've been writing for, telling the story of Eldacar of Arnor, son of Valandil and grandson of Isildur, as he assumes the throne in T.A. 249.

https://tolkien-weekly.livejournal.com/1252062.html  "Long Live The King" (Hands)

https://tolkien-weekly.livejournal.com/1252408.html  "A King's Grief" (Face)

https://tolkien-weekly.livejournal.com/1253040.html  "Bibelot" (Key)

https://tolkien-weekly.livejournal.com/1253511.html  "In The Throne Room" (Crown)

The fifth prompt is "Strike". I'm trying to get the ideas to flow while sleep deprived...

(ETA: Here it is!) https://tolkien-weekly.livejournal.com/1254130.html "Gondor Approaches" (Strike).

Wish me luck!

Title: Nerdanel's Own Forge

Author: Kaylee Arafinwiel

Summary: Nerdanel muses on her fellow smiths, and her lost older brother Varyano (OC)

A/N: Apologies to JRR Tolkien and Elizabeth Bishop!

"The art of forging is extremely hard to master."
"The coals too red, the heat of Aulë’s fire intense!"
“A nis, to forge?” Disbelief – they say I court disaster.

I scoff. I’ll show them – mine atar’s heir, much faster
Am I than they to learn the craft of Aulë. A hammer
At the forge since I could toddle – hard to master?

I would laugh, to bruise their fragile ner pride, fluster
Their jokes, their sneers. Had my brother lived, then I
Would ne’er need forge; he was lost to a disaster.

I beat out the copper steady-handed; I, near-master
Have been given the joy of my own forge. Hear, brother!
Varyano’s name is my prayer. Of our forge I am master.

I lose myself in the work, the song of the forge, and vaster
Than all of Aman, than Ekkaia, I feel we two together
Varyano, my forge-partner – until I court, a disaster

Even with your loss, brother unknown, I mourn a specter
I shan’t work alone. Send me a forge-partner you deem worthy!
The art of forging isn’t hard for Mahtan’s daughter to master.
The art of loving, of courting – truly that could bring disaster.

Here I am! B2MEM is soon to be upon us, and once again, as back in 2012, it's a Bingo Card game! I'm excited to participate. I'm going to try not to claim cards I already tried last time (this year, only ten can officially be "claimed"), though I'm going to try and write for the previous cards as well. I just won't be able to use unclaimed cards to "win". :)

I've been having a lot of Real Life going on lately.

Have any of you decided which B2MEM cards you're going to claim, and what direction you'll take your works? One big connected thing, or a lot of small things?

 https://dayzeroproject.com/user/kayleearafinwiel85/list/145856

So I'm working on this list. One of the ideas to work on is cooking something from every country in the world. My friend and co-author AfricanDaisy has started on that challenge, and I was inspired to try too.

The problem is, the first country, alphabetically (well, the first widely recognised country) is Afghanistan. I've tried looking up Afghan recipes of all kinds - the idea is to make a 3 course meal, if possible anyway - and literally everything I've run across - even breakfast! - contains onions as a central ingredient. I can't eat onions in most circumstances. Onion powder/dried onion seems to be ok as a flavoring, and frozen chopped onion occasionally works. I have a feeling it's a certain type of onion that I'm sensitive to but can't pin it down, and I don't want to hurt myself.

Any advice?

Kaylee

So it's been quite a day. I don't often blog about Real Life, but today it crossed paths with Tolkien fandom, so here goes.

I've not often had the good luck to meet one of my fandom friends offline, and that's what I did today. I hope that [personal profile] mybluerose

doesn't take offense to the fact that I'm writing about her (well, us) without asking first. I just want to thank her for being awesome. <3

We've known of each other, at least, for a few years now, but I didn't know all that much about her - I definitely wasn't expecting to find out that, so far as fandom goes, we might as well have been next door neighbors *chuckles* (And that not too long ago, we actually lived in even closer proximity than we do now!)

Possibly boring details... )

So much love to Blue Rose from me and Donut, (and fish from Donut), many thanks for being awesome, and I can't wait to see you again soon!
